And now the 2020 US Coffee Championships season really begins. After eight preliminaries for the Barista Championship and nine for the Brewers Cup, we’re now onto the Qualifying Events, the semi-finals of sorts where competitors earn their way into the national round. Half of the national field will decided this weekend in Sumner at the first of the two Qualifying Events (the second happening next month in Nashville).
A sum total of 76 competitors will take the stage in Sumner this weekend—40 in Barista and 36 in the Brewers Cup—with the top 18 and 12, respectively, punching their tickets to the US Coffee Championships in Orange County, California at the end of February. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, we’ve still got Day One of the Sumner Qualifying Event in front of us. So let’s meet the competitors, shall we?
